SS:  Today we finished our compass rose and notes on latitude and longitude.  No HW

Math:  Today we continued working on our sheet from Monday and the sheet below in order to practice our verbal models.  HW finish both sheets (most people finished in class or Homeroom).

Today we had a little Halloween fun with a story where students created the sounds, a following directions activity, and a mad lib (with parts of speech review).  With a little time left, we looked at our argument writing question.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched CNN 10 & worked on creating a compass rose.  No Homework!

TOMORROW'S TRIP TO THE SAUGATUCK DUNES STATE PARK HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO NEXT WEEK, TUESDAY DUE TO WEATHER CONCERNS.

SS:  We finished simple graphing and worked on our compass rose.  Latitude and Longitude practice tomorrow.  No HW

Math:  Today we worked on verbal models.  This can be tough.  See notes under the math note page on the right.  Assignment below ~~ put in 20 - 30 minutes ONLY on this assignment.

Science: Today, the kids checked their ecosystems and filled in their data collection sheets. They took an updated photo and uploaded it to their slide show. No homework!

SS: In Social Studies, the kids watched CNN10 and answered some questions about tools geographers use. No homework!

Today we passed back & went over scores for the summary, characterization, and vocabulary assessments.  Then, we did a journal & discussion over our rules and consequences that we have both at home and at school.  This activity was a kickoff to our argument writing question we will begin together next time.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched Tour the World again at the request of the students.  We reviewed our vocabulary with a worksheet.  We then added compass rose to our vocabulary & discussed its purpose.  Students were given some directions for starting their own compass rose.  No Homework!!

SS:  Today we continued working with the idea that graphing and latitude/longitude are the same.  No HW

Math:  We worked with substitution today.  Most kids finished the sheet.  If not finished in class, finish for Monday.

Science: Today in Science, the students finished their "working agreements" posters in their ecosystem groups. Then, they continued working on the jaguar population math we started Wednesday. No homework!

Social Studies: Students watched CNN10, watched another "zoom" video clip, and began reading about geographers and the tools they use.

**Reminder: We will be going outside several times next week. Please check the forecast and dress appropriately for the cold weather. Also, you may want to consider extra clothes, socks, shoes, etc. in case you get wet outdoors!**

Today we went to library for checkout.  Then, we discussed the vocabulary examples from the movie & did a review activity.  Vocabulary Quiz is tomorrow!  HW - Study if you feel you need to!

Social Studies -
Today we did a latitude and longitude lesson.  Students had to use coordinates to locate countries on Earth.  No Homework!

SS: We are working with our global grid.  Tomorrow we will do some graphing review before working with coordinates on the globe.  No HW

Math:  T-V-COE-CON  Yes, that's what we are studying!  Ask your child what this means!  We worked with these terms today and checked it before class ended, so NO HW - Hooray!!!

Science: Today we checked our ecosystems outside. Please remind kids that we will be going out to check most days, so please be prepared for the weather. Summer is over :).

We also began writing our "working agreements" in our groups. No homework!

SS: Today the students looked at the pages of the picture book called "Zoom". They also watched a couple video clips with the same idea-- zooming in on a spatial scale. No homework.

Today we defined the terms latitude and longitude, discussed how they were measured, and talked about how to use a grid.  No Homework!


**Your student has a note coming home today about a field trip next week.  The note is to serve as informational so that you can help your student plan to dress for the weather & so that you know where we will be. :)  No chaperones are needed.  Below is the information that is in the note:

Saugatuck State Park Field Trip

Throughout 6th grade, one of our goals is to give ALL students outside learning experiences in each season.  For our fall outdoor experience, we will be headed as a team to the Saugatuck State Park for some activities.  There is no cost for this experience, but wanted to inform you that your student will be off campus for this trip in case you needed to plan accordingly for appointments, etc.

What:  Trip to Saugatuck State Park
When:  Tuesday, October 31st  from 8:00 – 10:45 a.m.

Today we took a "tour" of all of the countries in the world.  Then, we kicked of a study of map features.  Today we did an activity called "Zoom" that focused on zooming in and out on details.  No Homework!

Today we went to library for checkout time.  Then, students had time to continue working on their summary and characterization assessment.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Students read a section of text about the tools geographers used.  We looked at a variety of map projections and discussed the issues with each.  Finally, we talked about how the size of certain places is actually different than what is projected on a map sometimes.  No Homework!

**Reminder:  Tomorrow (Friday) is a half day with a 10:45 dismissal.  Students have a Fuel Up to Play 60 event & should dress ready to move.  Also, Monday there is no school for students.**

Math:  Today we took a quiz on adding and subtracting decimals.  We then began working with multiplying decimals.  HW is to finish the multiplication problems - no calculators!

Today we reviewed all of our terms, and finished our discussion on how the assessments will be graded.  Students had an opportunity to ask any final questions.  Then, they got started by reading the story of "The Loser".  Students had an option to read alone or listen to a read aloud version.  This story is what they will use for their characterization and summary assessment which will be completed tomorrow.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Students did a group challenge today.  They had to attempt to wrap a ball with paper without overlapping.  This is an introductory activity to discussing map projections.  No Homework!

Science: Today in Science, the students took an assessment covering two standards (1- developing and using models to show knowledge, 2- construct, use, and/or present a written argument supported by observable evidence and scientific reasoning to support or refute an explanation or a model for a phenomenon).

After the assessment, the students heard about our assigned mini-ecosystems we will be observing over the next couple weeks.

Social Studies: We continued discussing what geographers do. No homework!

Science: Today in Science, the students did a couple more academic vocabulary words, watched a video about how 14 wolves changed the Yellowstone National Park ecosystem, and reviewed class terms and content with a game of "5 second rule". No homework!

Social Studies: Students read an article about what geographers do. No homework!

Today we watched CNN 10 for our dose of current events.  Then, we reviewed why we should study geography and went over two vocab words:  geographer and global citizen.  No Homework!!

SS:  We looked at some Human Geography items to see if we can determine why it is where it is on the earth.  No HW

Science: Today in Science, the students wore necklaces to resemble different pieces of an ecosystem. Together, we talked through and created a food web with a ball of yarn, connecting ourselves to our classmates and their necklaces. No homework!

Social Studies: Today we defined geography. No homework!

Today we went to library for checkout time.  Then, we had our Hope pre-teaching student read the book The Giving Tree to us.  Finally, we did one last practice summary (before the assessment next week) on the book.  While students were writing the summary, myself & our Hope student circulated to give any pointers and feedback to the students.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we did a reading exercise called, What is Geography?  Then, we started discussing the concept of looking at situations through different lenses.  No Homework!!

Math:  Today we continued working with our dividing of fractions, including word problems.  Dividing Fractions & Mixed Number sheet due tomorrow!  No calculators!  Notebook pages to the right may help if you get stuck!

SS:  Today we finished our 5 Themes country writings.  We also drew the world from memory to see what we know and what we could label.  Very fun!  No HW

Today we reviewed our terms & then practiced characterization with a story.  Students had to identify if the characterization was direct or indirect and provide their proof.  This is the same activity they will do as an assessment next week.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we discussed the two types of geography - Physical & Human.  We took some notes on topic as well.  No Homework!!

SS:  We continued to work on our 5 themes country writing piece.  Some finished and some will still be writing tomorrow.  It is not coming home until completed and scored.  No HW

Today we discussed the compare and contrast activity the students completed on two readings yesterday.  Then, we completed work in our academic vocabulary books over 3 terms that will be used in our next set of reading skills:  characterization (direct & indirect), text evidence, and inference.  No Homework!!

Today we caught up on current events.  Then, we discussed a couple facts about the articles that students read on Monday.  Finally, we did a world sketch from memory & defined the term geography.  No Homework!!

Math:  Today we continued practicing multiplying fractions.  Finish Puzzle Time tonight.  We will also be checking our prime multiplication of the numbers 1 - 50 from a couple weeks ago.

Science: Today in Science, the students discussed the difference between food chains and food webs. We watched a Bill Nye video and filled in some notes to end the hour. No homework!

Social Studies: Students finished their country project research today. This research needs to be in class, done, tomorrow. Students that haven't finished in the last 4 hours of research will need to complete it at home/HAWKS as homework.

Today we went over the rules for a quality summary.  Then, we used our "Tuesday of the Other June" story to practice using an organizer to plan a summary & to write a model summary.  We talked about a 6th grade level of quality summary and how to meet that standard.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
We completed a vocabulary page about our standard of "Generate Argument".  Then, we worked on developing an argument about whether or not we would recommend living in the country we researched.  No Homework!!

Today we finished reading "Tuesday of the Other June" and identified the types of bullying, the HA-HA-SO strategies.  We shared those with each other along with our predictions.  Finally, we started discussing the key elements of a 6th grade quality summary & discussed the key events of the story to include.  No Homework!!!

Today we had a final work day to research the country we selected.  No Homework!!
