Science: Today in Science, the students worked through a checklist of tasks to complete. This included finishing the aboitic vs. biotic paper from yesterday, adding proficiency scales to our science notebooks, and finishing ecosystem poster presentations.

Social Studies: Students continued researching their chosen country.

No homework!

Monday:
Science: Students will hunt through a Ecology Kids Discover magazine for answers to questions. No homework!

Social Studies: Students will read through two current event articles in a junior scholastic magazine.  They will answer questions from the articles. No homework!

Today we did our "Mindful Minutes" exercise!  Many seemed excited to be doing this again.  So fun to try something new!  Then, we worked on reading "Tuesday of the Other June" and writing our predictions while reading.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
We worked on our research for our country that we selected yesterday.  No Homework!!

Today we went to library for book checkout.  Then, we returned to do the words prediction & summary in our vocabulary booklets (these are review, but we talked about 6th grade requirements for each).  Then, we started reading the story "Tuesday of the Other June", which we will read and practice the during reading strategy of prediction.

Social Studies -
Today we selected countries and started doing some research about our country!  No Homework!!

Social Studies: Today the students started their country projects! Within the project, they will find examples of the 5 themes of geography for their chosen country. No homework!

Today we shared & discussed our empathy maps.  Then, we did an academic vocabulary page with the word empathy.  Finally, we watched a few video clips to reinforce what empathy is, how we can improve at showing it, and why we should care about becoming more empathetic towards others! 
No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we caught up with CNN 10 & some current events.  Then, we read aloud a book and applied the 5 Themes to what we read.  No Homework - except be thinking of a country you are interested in for our 5 Themes country research project!

Math:  We finished up our GCF work and organized the rest of our math notebooks.  No HW -- Have a great evening!!

Math:  We worked on our GCF papers.  Due tomorrow.  Calculators are OK.  Please don't spend more than 30-ish minutes on the whole thing.  If it takes longer, we still need to work on it.

SS:  We are working on our 5 Themes flip books.  Students have the rubric that outlines how it will be graded.  These are due Monday, October 2.

Today we worked on our empathy mapping.  Students had a common student scenario & had to work in a small group to identify what that person is thinking, seeing, saying, doing, feeling, and hearing under the circumstances.  Then, we shared out and discussed.  We are really working on thinking about others and showing kindness & empathy.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Students had time to work on their 5 themes flip books.  Then, we read a Berenstein Bears story & attempted to apply the themes to the story.  No Homework!

Here's to hoping this is our last really warm day!!  The kids have been troopers!!

Math:  Today we worked on Greatest Common Factor (GCF).  Students have a sheet of 12 word problems.  They need to solve for the GCF using one of our strategies AND illustrate the answer using a picture (we modeled this in class).  For each problem.  Calculators are OK.  Notes on how to do it are under the math notebook link to the right.  Due tomorrow

SS:  Today we assembled and started working on our 5 themes of geography flip books.  These are due Monday, October 2!

Today we reviewed the 5 types of bullies and the 6 strategies for victims & bystanders.  Then, we talked about if we feel that bullying in a problem in our school -- I appreciate the honest conversations we had.  Finally, we started to discuss a very important word -- EMPATHY!!  Tomorrow we will continue an activity we started today.  No Homework!! 

** Parents:  I rarely give English homework, but students should be reading at least 20 minutes most nights instead!!!  Reading practice = reading growth!**

Math:  We continue working with our factors.  Section 1.4 numbers 1 - 25 are to be completed by tomorrow's class.  Calculators are OK.  Math notes can be found on the math notebook page (link on the right).

SS:  We have been researching our hometown and how the 5 themes are represented.  Students are creating posters for this.  Posters will be presented in class tomorrow.  HW:  Finish if needed.

Science: Today in Science, the students began discussing the ecosystem of a salmon. We watched a couple video clips, brainstormed in a group, researched a tad, and began writing a journal drawing and writing about a salmon's ecosystem. In the journal, they are asked to use all 5 of our science academic vocabulary words we have defined so far. No homework!

Social Studies: Today the students did their first academic vocabulary word for SS: analyze. After this, we worked on 5 themes of geography flipbooks. No homework!

Today we discussed feeling safe in school & its impact on our learning.  We defined the terms:  bullying, bully, and victim.  Then, we read about different types of bullying.  Students are in groups to become an "expert" on one type -- they are planning a quick presentation to teach the class about the type.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we reviewed the word analyze by looking at details in a picture.  Then, we started discussing the 5 Themes of Geography.  No Homework!!

SS:  Today is Constitution Day!  We watched CNN10 and tried our hand at some Constitution trivia.  Then we put the preamble in order (we learned it last year) and worked on its definition.  No HW

Today we had some work time and sharing time to wrap up our summer story writing.  Then, we completed a journal in regards to how safe students feel in school & if they believe safety impacts the ability to learn.  We will use this discussion to springboard into our 1st official unit where we will be reading & writing about bullying.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we did activities that centered around a celebration of Constitution Day.  No Homework!!

Math:  Today we took the Delta Screener.  Scores will be posted in PS as soon as I have the chance to put them in.  This is only one small tool we use to help understand each student as a math learner.  If you have questions, feel free to contact me.  "Powers" homework is due tomorrow!  Calculators are OK on this assignment.

SS:  Today we worked on better understanding the skill of "Analyze" and practiced as a class with a dime.  No HW today!  Anyone still missing their timeline or Coat of Arms MUST get them in ASAP!

Today we discussed the history of the day 9/11.  We also spent a little time discussing Hurricane Irma.  Then, we worked on our personal timeline a bit.  No Homework!

Today we did a writing assignment with the starter of "I wish my teacher knew..... ".  Students had to share 3 things in detail that they would like me to know about themselves.  This could be anything from personal interests/information to information about them as a learner to how they feel about school.  When they finished the writing assignment, they worked on finishing their "I Am..." hands and then did some reading.  No Homework!

Social Studies -
Today we worked on setting up the intervals on our timeline & then we worked on making our timeline.  No Homework!

Today we started talking about the similarities between timelines and number lines.  You need 10 life facts about yourself, month, day and year if possible.  Tomorrow we will construct our timelines.  No HW tonight unless you have not yet gathered your 10 facts.  A few kiddos need to finish their coat of arms from class.

Math Mrs. Young

Today we really started working our brains.  Students have some review work with add, subtract, multiply and divide (2 sides).  If they didn't finish in class, they need to complete it for tomorrow.  Show all work.  No calculators!

Today we went to library for book checkout & discussed the 40 book challenge.  We set up our recording sheets for the year for the challenge.
Students will not get a lot of English homework this school year, but they should be READING AT HOME most nights of the week!!!  Please help them establish a time to read if they need a "nudge" to read on their own!!

Social Studies -
We discussed the current events of the natural disasters affecting parts of the US (fires out west & hurricanes down south).  Then, we talked about timelines - how to use them, what they are for.  Students will be creating a personal timeline with 10 events.
HW - Brainstorm events & get help with dates of those events if needed from home.
