SCHUITEMAN

ENGLISH -
We read another chapter in our read aloud.  Students then continued to research today.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
We watched today's episode of CNN 10 & then worked on some world population information.  Students then asked an "I wonder...." question about world population & started to do some research on that wonder.  No Homework!!

Reminder:  We have a scheduled 2 hour delay tomorrow (Wed. Feb. 1st)!

ENGLISH -
Today we read aloud in our book.  Then, we discussed how to identify credible/reliable websites for research & what information is needed to list the website as a source.  Finally, we had a little time for research.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched CNN 10 & discussed.  Then, we dove into discussing population and examining the increases and decreases across the world over time.  No Homework!

Math:  We are still practicing percent of a number and finding the whole when given the percent and a part.  Students also took a quiz over their squares and cubes flashcards.  Much improved.  Keep studying.  No other homework.

SS:  Finished and shared out village of 100 pictures today!  No HW

We went to the library for book checkout.  We then came back & worked hard on our database and book research!!  We will research for about 3 more class periods.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched CNN 10 for current events & then worked on drawing & writing conclusions & predictions for our village of 100 activity.  No Homework!!

Today students were introduced to the databases available for research on mel.org.  This is a GREAT resource for research..... providing published & reliable sources of information in a search engine format.  Students either continued with book research or started trying to use the databases for research on their topics.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched CNN 10 for 10 minutes of current events.  Then, students continued working on their visual representations of the village of 100.  Also, if they had time, they began to write some conclusions with the data & make some predictions for the future.  No Homework!

Today shared good news & we read in our read aloud to start.  Then, students continued to work on their book research.  No Homework!

Social Studies -
Today we eased back in to Social Studies after a week off for swimming.  We will continue to look at the World Population.... we will revisit where we left off, discussing what the world would be like if it were a village of only 100 people (since 7.3 billion is so hard to comprehend).   No Homework!

Math:  We are continuing to work with percents.  Students should finish today's sheet if they didn't finish in class.  Calculators are OK.  Also, students should be practicing their squares and cubes flashcards.

SS:  We are continuing our discussion of the world's population by identifying our world as part of a village of 100 (7.3 billion is too hard to imagine).  Students chose parts to illustrate.  No HW

We enjoyed our last day of swimming today!  I am so proud of all of the students!  They did a great job & had fantastic attitudes each day!

Social Studies: Today in SS, the students watched CNN 10 and made a visual for world population. No homework!

Reminder: We start swimming tomorrow! Students need a suit, towel, bag, goggles (if they choose, or $5 to buy them), and a hair tie if they have long hair.

Math:  We are continuing to work with % of a number (ex:  What is 15% of 50?) and finding the whole when given a % and a part (ex: 3 is 15% of what number?).  Students should finish the sheet we worked on today for tomorrow.  Calculators are OK on this sheet.

English -
Today we went to the library for book checkout.  Then, students went through a selection process for research essay topics.  Finally, we started talking about types of sources and keeping track of our sources.  No Homework!

Social Studies -
Schuiteman HR continues to swim this week!!  :)  No regular Social Studies.

Still seeing problems with boys/girls being far too interested in each other.  We definitely need to take some time to have a chat about school and "relationships" at 6th grade age.

Also struggling to get some of our kiddos to turn in their work!  Oh Boy!  Bad habits!!

Math:  We are still working with Percent of a Number.  For example, What is 25% of 72?  This is an easy calculation, but when put into context of real-life problems, it gets more challenging.  We will continue working on these.  Weekly homework is due tomorrow!!

Social Studies:  Today we finish looking at South America.  Tomorrow we begin talking about population of the earth.  No HW

Science: Today in Science, the students conducted the experiment they designed to discover which side of a penny can hold more water (heads or tails). Within their experiment, they were asked to collect data and document their procedures.

When they concluded their experiment, students began their first lab write up, trying their best to complete it on their own, allowing me to collect data on their initial lab write up. Tomorrow we will finish these in class, and then walk through their experiments and write ups together, with instruction about each step for future labs. No homework!

Social Studies: Students researched world populations today. No homework!

A COUPLE OF PROBLEMS CROPPING UP LATELY . . . . .

First, missing work!  Holey Moley!!!!  Lots and lots and lots of missing assignments!  A few no name papers, but not enough to cover this!

Second, "Boy Crazy" and "Girl Crazy"!!  This doesn't usually start this early!  We have so many boys being silly over girls and so many girls being silly over boys and it is only January!  Wow!  Perhaps it is time to have a chat about school behaviors!!

Finally, we are starting to see an increase in bullying types of behaviors.  This isn't OK at any time!


Math:  Today we worked on % of a number.  You can help your child by asking them to do some calculations like finding sales tax or tip at a restaurant.  Weekly HW is due Friday.

SS:  South American elevation and capital cities.  No HW

We did not have Social Studies today because we had swimming!!!  All students did fantastic!  I am so proud of how they handled themselves today!!  Nerves are out & we are ready to have 4 more days of fun!!

SCHUITEMAN

ENGLISH -
Today we shared good news from the weekend, read in our read aloud, and then we discussed plagiarism.  We defined it, talked about why we don't want to do it in our writing, and then started to discuss a technique to avoid it -- putting writing into our own words!  We started practicing some note taking skills.  No Homework!

Social Studies -
We wrapped up Friday's conversations about "If the World were a Village of 100...." with a video clip, and then we discussed MLK Jr. Day.  Finally, we completed a journal based off of one of his famous quotes.  No Homework!!

**SCHUITEMAN HOMEROOM:  Don't forget we start swimming TOMORROW (TUESDAY)!!!  You will need a suit, towel, googles, plastic bag for wet items, and a hair tie for long hair!!  Don't forget!!

Social Studies: Today we talked about Martin Luther King Jr. and his impact on today's world. No homework!

SS:  Today is our last day of swimming.  Kiddoes have improved sooo much!  It is amazing what 5 days did for their swimming skills!  Super proud of all of them!!!

Today we went to Library for checkout.  Then, we used an online game called Kahoot to have some fun reviewing our topics we discussed on Wednesday.  No Homework!!

Social Studies-

SCHUITEMAN HOMEROOM -- Swimming will now be starting on Tuesday due to our ice day yesterday!!  Mrs. Young's Homeroom needs to finish on Monday before we start! :)

ENGLISH -
Today we read in our read aloud book, we defined "research essay", and we talked about the difference between reading fiction and reading non-fiction.  This is all leading to our next unit - an informational research essay.  No Homework!

Social Studies -
Today we started with a journal on world population, looked at the world population clock, did a population distribution activity & checked out a 3D Globe Website.  No Homework!

Math:  We finished our fraction-decimal-percent word problems and corrected them.  Students worked on their quilt project and weekly homework.  Both are due Friday.  Calculators are OK for the quilt project but not the weekly homework.

SS:  Swimming!  No SS today.

Today we went over the argument writing assessment that was returned to students.  Then, we did another chapter in our read aloud.  Finally, we worked on wrapping up our work with setting goals for 2017.  No Homework!

Social Studies -
Today we looked at the connection between elevation & capital cities in South America.  Then, we wrapped up our discussions on the Geography of South America with a video & musical connection.  Finally, we started thinking about our next unit by taking a look at the world population clock.  No Homework!

ENGLISH -
Today we worked on a "pre-test" - students had to write their version of an informational essay (what they know one to be right now).  This will be used to compare to a "post-test" following our next unit - Informational Essay Writing!  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched and discussed CNN 10.  Then, students finished their thermograph comparisons.  No Homework!!

Mrs. Schuiteman's Homeroom - Remember, our turn for swimming is next week!!!  I will send a reminder note later in the week, but now is a great time to start finding those swim suits!!! :)

Science: Today we continued practicing the use of graduated cylinders and triple beam balances.  We will continue using these tools throughout the week and have a paper assessment, along with a "know and show" portion.

Social Studies: Today we took our compare/contrast & describe/explain assessment using our thermagraphs. No homework!

MRS. YOUNG'S HOMEROOM WILL BE SWIMMING NEXT WEEK FROM 1:30 - 2:30.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR SUIT (1 PIECE IF POSSIBLE), TOWEL, GOGGLES, AND A HAIR TIE IF YOU HAVE LONG HAIR.  You may want to wear your suit under your clothes if you are shy about changing in front of others.

Math:  Today we continued working with fractions/decimals/percents (FD%).  If your child didn't finish the shading sheet with percent and fraction conversions, they need this for Monday.  Most finished.  No HW otherwise.

Today we read in our new read aloud, Double Identity.  Then, we decided on & wrote down our 2017 goals:  2 goals we would like to work towards, something we want to start doing 0 times (a bad habit to break, 1 NEW thing we would like to try, and 7 books we would like to read this year.

Social Studies -
We watched CNN 10, and then we worked on drawing conclusions using our thermographs we have been creating.  Students did some comparisons of cities & explain conclusions they thought of.

Today we went to library for a return, renew, & checkout time.  Then, we came back to the room to finish Chapter 1 in our new read aloud.  Finally, we talked about goal setting & started brainstorming some goals we are going to set for 2017.  We will work on this tomorrow!  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched the new CNN 10 (Student News) and continued working on Thermographs.  No Homework!!

Math:  Students worked with % today!  Did you know that % means "out of 100"?  They should finish shading percents and the rates practice 1/2 sheet for tomorrow!  Calculators are OK for this.

SS:  Today we finished creating our Thermographs AND writing descriptive explanations of what we see.  Assessment soon!

Today we did a free write journal about our Christmas break.  We then did some small group sharing and whole group sharing.  I also introduced and started our new read aloud book today.  No Homework!

Social Studies -
Today we started on Thermographs!  No Homework!

Welcome back kiddos!

Science: Today in Science we spent the hour reviewing for TOMORROW'S microscope assessment in three ways: 1) parts review 2) practice focusing slides 3) blank sheet review.

For the assessment tomorrow, students should be able to match the names of the microscope parts with their locations, know the rules for using a microscope (on the back of their notesheet), and they will also be asked to "know & show" me how to focus the microscope with a chosen prepared slide.
