Mrs. Young

Math & Social Studies were omitted today to celebrate Fuel Up To Play 60, Be The Good, and introduce Career Goal setting.  No homework.

Today we spent the day doing activities!  We did a little bit of Be the Good, some career consideration activities, and a Fuel Up to Play 60 Carnival time -- complete with healthy smoothie samples!  Fun things happening here at HMS!!

Science: Today we began talking about symbiotic relationships. Students learned about parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism. We will finish our fact-finding on Tuesday! No homework!

Social Studies: Today we took our vocabulary assessment (which will count for an ELA standard score). No homework!

Math:  We took a quiz today over coordinate graphing.  Continue working on your graphing picture.

Social Studies:  We continued working on our Consequences presentations.  Should be able to present Tuesday when we return.

ENGLISH -
Today we went to the library for book checkout time.  We also discussed examples of each of our vocabulary words.  No Homework -- aside from spending some time reading! :)

SOCIAL STUDIES -
Today we started looking at the continent of Africa-- in particular, the type of climate there & how that impacts the types of animals, the types of vegetation, and the types of crops that are grown there.  We first thought about what we already know & what we were curious about, then we took some notes with some maps about the topics.  No Homework!

Math:  Today we continued working on coordinate graphing.  Kiddos received a review sheet for a quiz on Thursday.  They should be continuing to work on their coordinate graph projects also.

Social Studies:  We took our vocabulary quiz today.  No homework.

Today we read another chapter from our read aloud.  We also started a movie that we are using to review all bullying vocabulary words & to talk about "theme" as the second part of reading standard 2.  No Homework!!

Today we started working on our larger graphing pictures.  These will be a challenge for some.  Fun overall, we hope.  They can work on these outside of class.  When finished they will need to color them.  No due date set yet.

Science: Today we created a food web from organisms found in a pond habitat. No homework-- but we will have an assessment on our academic vocabulary from this unit on Wednesday!

Social Studies: Today we went through our vocabulary from Friday and practiced latitude and longitude. We have a vocabulary assessment coming up this week for Social Studies also!

Today we discussed facts we learned about the Equator from Kids Discover yesterday.  We also played a treasure hunter activity (practicing working with a grid - like latitude and longitude and our cardinal & intermediate directions).  We used vocab words for just a bit as well.  No Homework!!

SS - Young

Math - Young

Today we started graphing in the four coordinates.  We started with some simple pictures.  Originally, I asked kids to work on it for a little while tonight, but have since changed my mind.  No homework.  I don't think they're ready to go it alone just yet!

Today we shared things we are looking forward to for the weekend & read a little further in our read aloud.  Then, we had some work time to finish up our practice summary & characterization.  We then started to discuss what it will take to get a "3" on an assessment over these skills.  We will continue this conversation on Monday as we lead up to our assessment next week!  No Homework!

SOCIAL STUDIES -
Today we watched a CNN Student News & discussed some current events.  We also discussed the location of some ancient cities and their relationship to the equator -- talking about how that impacts temperature.  No Homework!

Social Studies - Young

Today we looked a little more closely at the equator and the climate of the past in major cities and how it impacted life.  No HW

Math - Young

Today we reviewed for a quiz tomorrow over integers and rational numbers.  If kiddos want to prepare, they should refresh their memories on how to convert between fractions - decimals - and percents, as well as place value and ordering numbers.  I suspect this will be a really good quiz.

ENGLISH -
Today we went to library for our weekly checkout time.  Then, we practiced writing a summary and doing some direct & indirect sharing from an article that we read yesterday, "Girl Power".  There will be a quiz next week over these skills we have been practicing!  No Homework!!

SOCIAL STUDIES -
We ran out of time yesterday, and did not complete the Zoom book activity, SO we did that today!!   We worked on sequencing events, asking detailed questions, and working together!   No Homework!!

Today we read another chapter or two in our read aloud.  We discussed our characterization finds from "Tuesday of the Other June", then we reviewed "text evidence" and "inference".  Finally, we read a short non-fiction article at the end of our hour.  Tomorrow we will again practice summarizing & inferencing with this non-fiction article. No Homework!!!

SOCIAL STUDIES -
Today we used our compass rose that we made, and then we did a sequencing activity with the picture book Zoom.  No Homework!!

Today we wrote about our bedroom/house drawings.  We also looked at the need to look up close or far away at a place.  Finally we started working with the equator, tropics, etc.  No Homework.

We have been working on converting fractions - decimals - percents.  I think we are starting to get it.  No homework.

Today we shared good news from the weekend & read another chapter in our read aloud.  Then, we went over a sample of a "good" summary & tried to write our own summary using the model to guide us.  Finally, we discussed some important vocabulary words.  No Homework!!

Today we went over our World map pre-test and talked about some map terminology.  Then, students started designing their own compass rose.  No Homework!!

Science: Today we finished biome research! Students will have Monday to work on their Pyramid-- they are DUE Tuesday. This means that if students are NOT done researching, they should finish that over the weekend!

Social Studies: Today we talked about maps and items usually labeled on maps. We discussed the equator, tropic of Cancer, tropic of Capricorn, Prime Meridian, key/legend, scale, cardinal directions, ordinal directions, etc. No homework!

ENGLISH -
Today we went to library for book checkout!  We then came back and reviewed what a summary was.  Finally, we practiced what 5 key things need to be in a summary.  No Homework!

SOCIAL STUDIES -
Today we watched CNN Student News for some of the latest current events.  Then, we did a world map pre-test and discussed some vocabulary terms.  No Homework!

REMINDERS:  ART PRIZE is TOMORROW!!!!  Remember, you do not need your binders, but a small string bag is recommended to carry your lunch, water bottle, etc.  Remember to bring a lunch that is completely disposable.  Also, you should plan to bring a notebook or some kind of device with a camera (with your parent's permission).  Let's get ready for a fabulous day!!!

Today we caught up on a few of the things that were started when I was out of class for my foot surgery.  We then talked about different map looks and how close do we need to be for different purposes.  No homework.

Today we had very special visitors -- the high school German Exchange students came to visit our class, and we were able to have a question & answer session with them about their culture!
