SCHUITEMAN

ENGLISH -
Today we read further in our read aloud.  We debriefed on Empathy.  We talked about the reading skill of prediction & started a story called, "Tuesday of the Other June".  We will use all of the vocabulary we have been learning along with a couple of reading skills to discuss this story!
No Homework!!

SOCIAL STUDIES -
Today we worked on covering a volleyball with paper.... we will debrief on Monday.  Hint:  We will talk about map projections.  No Homework!

Today we finished the discussion of geography.  Then played with Google Earth to locate some special places.  No homework.

Math - Young

Today we looked at how to compare decimals and fractions when positive or negative.  We finished worksheet 6.3A.  No homework

Science: today in Science, the students continued academic vocabulary for the ecology unit. We also began filling in an example of a ecosystem organizational pyramid.

No homework, but students are allowed to bring tech in to research their assigned biomes on Monday and Tuesday of next week!

Social Studies: Today in Social Studies, the students worked through chapter two of our book with a partner. The main question of the chapter was "Why Do We Study Geography?"

Today we continued our discovery of geography and finished our election exploration from yesterday.  No HW

Today we added fractions and decimals to our exploration of positive and negative numbers.  This is a little more complicated.  No HW

Today we read a chapter from our book, and then we were busy Empathy mapping.  Students practiced putting themselves in someone else's shoes in a difficult scenario.  We will be sharing our maps with each other tomorrow!

Today we read and discussed Geographic Inquiry!   We also started answering - Why Do We Study Geography?  No Homework!!

Mrs. Young is out of the classroom today.  We worked on several Junior Scholastic articles today, one about the election.  No homework.

Math - Young

Mrs. Young is out of the classroom today.  We worked with positive and negative numbers today.  Also, we reviewed basic skills which is due tomorrow.

ENGLISH -
Today we read another chapter in our read aloud.  Then, we revisited the definition of the word EMPATHY.  Finally, we started an activity with a small group where we are "mapping" what it would be like to be a person in a certain scenario.  For example, if you were a new student to HMS, what would you be hearing, seeing, doing, feeling, and saying while at school.  No Homework!!

SOCIAL STUDIES -
Students continued a reading of Section 1 in Chapter 1 and also started a reading of either Chapter 2 OR Chapter 4.  We are working to define Geography and gather a base knowledge about what geography is.  No Homework!

Today we shared good news from the weekend & read another chapter in our book.  We then journaled about whether bullying is a serious issues in school or not.  We shared and discussed our thoughts on this.  Finally, we defined the word Empathy, which we will use more tomorrow!

We took a quick quiz over conditions and connections.  We then worked on a reading from Chapter 1 in our online text - What is Geography?

Science: Today we spent some time researching for our pond visit tomorrow. We will be studying the organisms found in the high school pond to discover the health of the pond and its water. No homework, but please keep these details in mind for tomorrow:

*If you have rubber boots, WEAR THEM! You are guaranteed to get whatever you wear on your feet wet and muddy.

*You may want to wear long pants because of the mosquitoes

*You may want to bring a change of clothes in case you get dirtier/more wet than you'd like to be for the remainder of the day :)

Today we worked on describing/explaining as per our standard "Describe/Explain"  (see your flip chart for explanation).  Students will be assessing conditions and connections using this standard very soon.  No homework.

Math - Young

Students got back their quiz from Tuesday.  They will continue to see these concepts through out the year and can improve their grades.  Next week they will likely see this again.  :-)  We also finished our perseverance problems.  No Homework!

Science:
Today in Science, students re-submitted their Felix analyses. We went through the abiotic/biotic sheet from yesterday, and took our second nature walk in search for more examples of biotic and abiotic factors.

I moved our assessment from being tomorrow to Monday. The assessment will be over biotic and abiotic factors!

Students will be allowed to bring in their own technology for Science tomorrow if they choose. I will have computers in the room available for use.


Social Studies:
Today we continued talking about conditions vs. connections. No homework!

Social Studies - Young

We are continuing to work through Connections and Conditions while trying to identify an early history location in North America.  No Homework

Math - Young

Today we started working on Perseverance.  Students were divided into small groups and given some problems to solve to demonstrate perseverance.  We will finish them tomorrow.  No Homework.

Social Studies -
Today we started to focus on Conditions and Connections in Geography.  Students also received their analyze assessment back from Monday.  This was a first attempt at showing how well they could analyze something.... a skill we are just starting to practice.  We will continue to assess analyzing throughout the year, so if the score is low for now, know they will have opportunities to improve!

Social Studies - Young

Today we continued working through and gaining an understanding of connections and conditions of a place.  We will continue to practice these in preparation for an assessment later.  Students received their Michigan Map analysis back today.  It is early in the year, so we don't yet expect them to be perfect.  We will continue working on analyzing through out the year.  No homework.

Math - Young

Students took a quiz over decimals today.  No homework.

ENGLISH -
Today we read another chapter in our read aloud.  We went over the definition of a bully & a victim.  Finally, we started reading and sharing about 5 different types of bullying.
As you can tell from our discussion our first theme will be Bullying-- what is it exactly?  How do we help stop it?  Our reading, writing, speaking, & listening (English skills) will focus around this theme for the first few weeks!

Social Studies -

Science: Today, many students were given back their Felix analysis and asked to read over my comments and requests to add detail/evidence to improve their scores. We then continued our ecology unit with some academic vocabulary and a practice quiz. No homework!

Social Studies: Today we watched CNN student news and then took our first assessment. No homework!

Today students had to create a way to remember what to do with the decimal point when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals.  Creativity was the key.  Many people creating poems, songs, skits, etc.  Presentations tomorrow.  Quiz tomorrow??

Social Studies- Lillmars

Today we continued our discussions about attention to detail and observations by beginning our "dollar drawing" competition. No homework!

Science

Wow! The kids have been SUPER excited about the fictional crime scene we've been studying and using to practice being scientists. Today we began doing forensic testing of the some of the evidence found at the scene. It is really fun to listen to the students hypothesize about what happened to poor Felix Navidad!

Math - Young

Today we worked on 8 practice problems using either addition, subtraction, multiplication or division of decimals.  Some students didn't finish and need to finish these tonight for homework.

Today we learned what it means to be efficient.  Not everyone is efficient right away, it takes time to become efficient in math.  Some of us are bunny hoppers.  Some are penguins.  Some are one-legged hoppers.  We are striving to be the best we can be and learn to become sprinters.  (Ask your child about this).  We talked through dividing decimals and started an 8 problem practice sheet.  No homework today!  Play outside!

Science

Hello!
My name is Mrs. Lillmars and I teach Science on our team (and Social Studies to my homeroom).

Today in Science, the students brainstormed, discussed, and created a poster about the characteristics of scientists. We learned that although many people picture scientists as men with crazy hair and a lab coat, ANYone can be a scientist! Today, the students learned that THEY ARE SCIENTISTS!

HW: The "Dear Mrs. Lillmars" letter we started yesterday is DUE tomorrow!
