Math:  We started Geometry today!  Looked at the formulas for finding area of triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids.  No HW  Weekly HW due today!

SS:  Research should be finished today!  Some students are writing their papers, some are still working on graphic organizers.  Whew!  What a lot of work!  No HW

Today we worked, worked, worked on writing our stories!!! :)
Students are encouraged to spend some time writing this weekend!  Like I told them, they do not need to spend hours, but even 20-30 minutes without distractions would do them wonders!
We will be looking to move into self revision & editing stages by no later than Tuesday's class period!

Social Studies -
Today we watched CNN 10 & then completed one more child's immigrant story before discussing a little with partners.  No Homework!

Today we went to library for a brief checkout time & then we continued writing!!!  At this point, nothing is "official" homework yet, but students are welcome to write at home!!

WE ARE SEEING SOME QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIORS STARTING TO FILTER INTO STUDENT'S CHOICES!  PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO MAKE GOOD CHOICES!

Math:  Today we finished our work with 1-step equations.  Will have a short quiz tomorrow and move on to geometry.  We also started a review packet to prepare for our M-Step which starts for 6th grade on May 11.  Weekly HW is due Friday!

*Many students continue to pile up missing assignments!  Please check up with your kids to be sure they are getting work completed and staying on top of things.  It is that time of year where some feel they're close enough to summer they don't have to work (or they just don't feel like it)!

SS:  We will finish our research today!  Some students have started writing their rough drafts!

Science: Today the students continued reading about sea floor spreading. Some were able to start writing a short story about using a submarine to explore the sea floor. No homework!

Social Studies: Research continues about assigned natural resources topics. No homework!

Today we were writing.... writing.... writing!!!  Our authors are working on creating their stories!!  What creative minds we have!!  No Homework!!  We will continue writing tomorrow!!

Social Studies -
Today we watched a video about American Samoa & discussed the push factors that are happening there.  We then started to look at some stories of some young American immigrants -- their why & their feelings on coming to the United States.  We will continue this activity tomorrow.  No Homework!

Today we went over some story starting ideas, ideas to replace the word "said" in our dialogue writing, and reminders for the story (i.e. must contain figurative language & some dialogue).  Then, students had a work time to continue planning and possibly to start writing.
HOMEWORK - FINISH STORY PLAN IF NOT APPROVED YET!!!

Social Studies -
Today did a card sorting activity to reinforce the idea of push and pull factors.  Then, we watched a video clip on the push factor going on in Samoa.  No Homework!

Today we finished sharing and discussing a picture book with a partner today (just reviewing our main vocabulary).  Then, I introduced the story writing assignment and shared the 3 main "rules".  Students will start the brainstorming process tomorrow!! No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we did a journal on how we might feel if we had to move to a different country.  We watched a video clip that interviewed 2 different immigrants.  Finally, we read an article about a family that moved to Texas from Thailand and worked on some questions.  No Homework!!

Science: Today in Science, the students finished their plate tectonics mini lesson and began color coding the tectonic plates of the Earth. No homework!

Social Studies: We started the topic of Natural Resources with a "cookie mining" activity. No homework!

Today we defined vocabulary and started to discuss migration.  No Homework!!

Today we read aloud Ch. 6 in our book.  Then, we went over what it takes as an author to create a character and a setting.  Finally, we talked about some sample settings using the 4 senses for description.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we went over the Natural Resource information & completed a personal response to a couple of questions about natural resources.  Then, we completed a journal to kick off our next theme.
No Homework!

Math:  We prepared for a quiz tomorrow.  Quiz topics include the distributive property, simplifying expressions, and equivalent expressions.  Weekly HW due Friday!

SS:  Today we mined for chocolate chips (coal).  Ask your child about how their landscape changed after all of their chips were removed.  No HW
*Tomorrow, we will start a research writing project about natural resources.

Reminder:  Tomorrow (Friday) is a half day!  Students will have a 10:45 am dismissal!

Lillmars

Today in Science, the students compared a hard boiled egg to the Earth and its layers. We also began making a flip book of Pangaea (the "super-continent" from 200 million years ago). No homework!

In Social Studies, students began their research on hazards! No homework!

Today we started a new read aloud.  It is a narrative non-fiction called, The Big Lie - a true story about the Holocaust.  Then, we took some notes over some different ways to write dialogue with proper punctuation... students will use this in their story they will be writing soon!!  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we did an open note "check in" quiz over hazards and weather.  They used their research from before break to answer a series of questions.  No Homework!

Today we watched CNN 10.  Then we looked at some climagraphs in the US as well as reviewed our information on hazards and weather in the US.  We will have an open note quiz tomorrow over this info.  No Homework!
