Today we went to library for a quick checkout, then we finished up the movie, "A Christmas Carol".  Finally, we discussed the similarities and differences to the play version that we read.  No Homework!

We continued doing some research about different Christmas traditions around the world.  Then, we shared what we found with each other to wrap up today.  No Homework!

Science: Today we worked on an introductory microscope lab called "Hello, Microscope". Students who didn't finish may do so tomorrow. HW: Kids who are able can bring in a few microscopic items like bug parts (I told them window sills are good places to look for dead insects) or pet hair.

Social Studies: Students continued to study about how other parts of the world celebrate this time of year. No homework!

Science: Today we labeled the parts of a microscope and got a bit of practice using one! No homework, but kids were asked to check out the window sills at home to see if there are any unwanted bugs we could look at :).

Science: Today the students watched a video called "118 Green Street" about the microscopic organisms found in and around our homes (and even on us)! No homework!

Social Studies: We pushed the classroom tables to the walls and did our best to form the continents out of yarn. We used paper pyramids to resemble mountains and put them in the majorly mountainous locations in the continents. No homework!

ENGLISH - Today students worked together to read the play format of "A Christmas Carol".  We also stopped to draw our visualizations of a few of the characters.  No Homework!

Social Studies - Today we discussed the various locations of the world's mountains & then focused in on the Andes Mountains and the other associations that go along with them.  No Homework!

Math:  We are still working on shopping (finding unit rates).  Some students are getting there, but others are still struggling.  You could work with your child by presenting them with store ads and asking them to calculate the unit rate, or similar questions.  We are looking to quiz over this next week.  If your child didn't finish the automobile speed/shopping sheet today, they should finish for tomorrow.  Weekly review is due tomorrow.

Science: Today was our last work day for the human impact essay! Students should have it shared with me by Friday unless they have extra time because they were absent (please check with me if unsure of when yours is due).

Math:  We calculated the amount of sugar in a 20 oz Coke today.  Wow!!!  Ask your child to find an item in your house that your family eats on a regular basis.  Just for fun, calculate the amount of sugar in a serving.  Holey Moley!  We eat a lot of sugar.  They should finish the cars/shopping sheet for tomorrow if not done.  Weekly review is due Friday!!

SS:  We looked at where the mountains are formed on the continents and, specifically, what the associations are between the plate techtonics, mountains, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc.  No HW

Students had a compare and contrast assessment today.  Using maps of both the United States and Africa, students had to complete a Venn Diagram and a written statement about the similarities and differences they observed.  No Homework!!

Science: Today in Science, the students should have completed their research and began their organizer for their argumentative writing on human impact. HW: All students were asked to come to Science with their first TWO reasons (and three pieces of evidence for each) filled out on their organizer.

Social Studies: Students did a practice venn diagram comparing and contrasting South America and Europe. We will take our assessment tomorrow. No homework!

Today we went over our Venn Diagrams of South America and Europe map comparison.  Students practiced writing a statement about how they were similar and how they were different using specific details.  We will have an assessment on this tomorrow.  No Homework!

Math - No math today.  We spent the morning working on an English assessment.

SS - Today we will talk about the assessment for SS tomorrow.  Nothing to study.  Then we started talking about South America.  No HW

ENGLISH

Today, ALL students did English all morning.  They did not have regular Science or Math this morning.  The purpose of this change up was to do an "authentic" argument writing setting.  Students were given a question to argue along with a video clip + 2 articles to read that would help them support the chosen side.  Once they gathered evidence, they started to plan & write an argument piece.  No Homework!!  We will brush up this piece throughout the week in English this week.

Social Studies: Students finished their inference sheets and began practicing compare and contrast topics. HW: Students should have their Venn Diagrams done for tomorrow!

Today we critiqued some samples of the bully argument piece.  We discussed how an argument piece is graded and students talked through how they would grade a piece.  Finally, we previewed our final argument writing task that we will begin on Monday.  HW - PLEASE BRING HEADPHONES FOR ENGLISH ON MONDAY and enjoy family & maybe a bit of a good book this weekend! :)

Science: Students researched human impact on the environment today and tried to decide on a stance: are humans more helpful or harmful to the environment? We will continue research tomorrow-- and eventually write an argumentative essay including our research. No homework!

Social Studies: In class today, kids used their data and climate graphs to make inferences about their set locations as far as use of air conditioners, irrigation, crops grown, apparel, etc. No homework!

Today, we continued working on our argument writing.  We went over the needs for the closing and then we used a self checking sheet to be sure that we had all of the necessary parts of the argument.

Students worked on finishing Climate Graphs, and drawing conclusions from their graphs.  If they finished, they shared with a partner about our conclusions.  No Homework!

Science: Today in Science, we had a small discussion on what types of impacts humans have on the environment. Students ended the hour reading/evidence hunting about whether hunting is helpful or harmful to the environment. No homework!

Social Studies: Students finished research on average precipitation and average temperatures for their two locations and finished their climate graphs. No homework!

Today students finished Day 10 of a 10 Days of Gratitude Journal..... your child is bringing this home this weekend, with the challenge of sharing some or all of it with someone in some way!  Ask him or her about it!!!

We also did some activities centered around Thanksgiving.... including creating something for someone we were thankful for -- ask your student about this!!

Finally, we had some time for a Hawk Walk & Gym Time in lieu of the Turkey Trot outside today.

Science: Kids used today's class to edit and time stamp their ecology videos to easily label where the academic vocabulary can be found. We will do out best to finish this process tomorrow.

Social Studies: Today students reflected back on what they learned about the latitude and what happens with climate and plants and animals as one moves away from the equator. No homework!

Math:  We reviewed for an online assessment that will take place tomorrow.  The review sheet is homework - No calculators!  Due tomorrow.

SS:  Students began working on a project surrounding a city, country.  There is no due date yet.  They will use this information to do some writing down the road a bit.  No homework.

Science: Today we graphed the data from Friday's "predator/prey" game. We analyzed the data with our groups and then discussed the questions as a class. HOMEWORK: The students have a paragraph to finish about limiting factors in ecosystems (what can be responsible for lowering a population other than a predator/prey relationship). These are DUE TOMORROW.

Social Studies: The students continued working on their Africa consequence lesson. They will need to have their lesson ready to teach on Wednesday.

Science: Today, we went outside and played predator vs. prey. After we came inside, we discussed how the game simulated life in the wild and what we witnessed with our population data during the game. No homework!

Social Studies: Today in SS, the students watched a CNN segment on distracted driving. Then, we filled out a KWL chart about Africa. We ended the hour sharing the "K" and "W" from our charts. No homework.

Today we reviewed for a quiz tomorrow over integers and rational numbers.  If kiddos want to prepare, they should refresh their memories on how to convert between fractions - decimals - and percents, as well as place value and ordering numbers.  I suspect this will be a really good quiz.

Social Studies: Today we talked about maps and items usually labeled on maps. We discussed the equator, tropic of Cancer, tropic of Capricorn, Prime Meridian, key/legend, scale, cardinal directions, ordinal directions, etc. No homework!

SOCIAL STUDIES -
Students continued a reading of Section 1 in Chapter 1 and also started a reading of either Chapter 2 OR Chapter 4.  We are working to define Geography and gather a base knowledge about what geography is.  No Homework!

Today in Science, students re-submitted their Felix analyses. We went through the abiotic/biotic sheet from yesterday, and took our second nature walk in search for more examples of biotic and abiotic factors.

Today we continued working through and gaining an understanding of connections and conditions of a place.  We will continue to practice these in preparation for an assessment later.  Students received their Michigan Map analysis back today.  It is early in the year, so we don't yet expect them to be perfect.  We will continue working on analyzing through out the year.  No homework.

ENGLISH -
Today we read another chapter in our read aloud.  We went over the definition of a bully & a victim.  Finally, we started reading and sharing about 5 different types of bullying.
As you can tell from our discussion our first theme will be Bullying-- what is it exactly?  How do we help stop it?  Our reading, writing, speaking, & listening (English skills) will focus around this theme for the first few weeks!

Science: Today, many students were given back their Felix analysis and asked to read over my comments and requests to add detail/evidence to improve their scores. We then continued our ecology unit with some academic vocabulary and a practice quiz. No homework!

Today we continued our discussions about attention to detail and observations by beginning our "dollar drawing" competition. No homework!

Science

Wow! The kids have been SUPER excited about the fictional crime scene we've been studying and using to practice being scientists. Today we began doing forensic testing of the some of the evidence found at the scene. It is really fun to listen to the students hypothesize about what happened to poor Felix Navidad!

Today we worked on 8 practice problems using either addition, subtraction, multiplication or division of decimals.  Some students didn't finish and need to finish these tonight for homework.

Today we learned what it means to be efficient.  Not everyone is efficient right away, it takes time to become efficient in math.  Some of us are bunny hoppers.  Some are penguins.  Some are one-legged hoppers.  We are striving to be the best we can be and learn to become sprinters.  (Ask your child about this).  We talked through dividing decimals and started an 8 problem practice sheet.  No homework today!  Play outside!

Science

Hello!
My name is Mrs. Lillmars and I teach Science on our team (and Social Studies to my homeroom).

Today in Science, the students brainstormed, discussed, and created a poster about the characteristics of scientists. We learned that although many people picture scientists as men with crazy hair and a lab coat, ANYone can be a scientist! Today, the students learned that THEY ARE SCIENTISTS!

HW: The "Dear Mrs. Lillmars" letter we started yesterday is DUE tomorrow!
