HAPPY HOLIDAYS!  MERRY CHRISTMAS!  It has been my absolute pleasure to spend these months with your child and your family!  I look forward to 2018 and continuing our partnership!  Be safe and enjoy your time!

Math:  Today we took an online assessment/data gathering tool.  Then, we played.  We don't get a chance to let loose and just play very often!  No HW

Students continued the activity today with the iPads to learn about how different cultures celebrate Christmas.  We discussed and shared at the end to wrap up.  No Homework!!

Science: Today the students did their initial self-created investigation and lab write-up (sort of like a science pre-test). Tomorrow we will finish these up and begin learning about each step to these lab write-ups. No homework!

SS: We watched CNN10, a short video clip about Vikings and then began creating a culture collage. Students were asked to put their name and 10 descriptive words/pictures about their own culture on a paper. We will finish these tomorrow. No hw.

SS:  We continue our exploration of Kolkata.  These packets will be HW tomorrow if not finished in class.  Optional to work on them tonight.

Math:  We are continuing to work on our rates/ratios packet.  We will be collecting these Friday!
     Also, many students need to retest geometry area.  They received their quizzes today as well as a review sheets to refresh their skills.  We spent a large chunk of class reteaching and asking/answering questions.  Fingers crossed for better results Monday as we re-quiz then.

Social Studies -
Today we watched a special edition of CNN 10 about the plastic problem in the Pacific Ocean, and then we did an observation activity and discussed stereotyping.  No Homework!!

Science: Today the students watched a demonstration about how the Hawaiian volcanoes were formed. They wrote a 7-part journal entry explaining how the demo worked.

No homework, but the students were told they could use a disposable water bottle starting Weds in class. If they don't bring one in, I have plenty they can borrow. If they do want to bring one in, it should just be a standard sized one (16.9 ounces) if possible.

Social Studies: The students wrote about the "young immigrants" we learned about last week. Then, we finished watching the Samoa video clip from last week. No HW.

Science: Today, the students learned about "hot spot" volcanoes and how this rare phenomenon has formed the Hawaiian islands. Then, we watched a Bill Nye video about earthquakes. No homework!

Social Studies: Students watched CNN10, finished their "Young Immigrants" research, and watched a video clip about Samoa. No homework!

Science- today the kids finished plotting volcano locations (using their latitude and longitude). They began plate tectonic stations and will finish these tomorrow.

Tomorrow, the students will also be taking a data analysis assessment. This is to use as baseline data to see where the students are with using graphs and data lists to answer a question. This will be the first time we have done an assessment like this, so there are no expectations at this point :).

Social Studies- the students watched CNN10 and read through some cards with different situations described. Their task was to decide if there was a push or a pull factor present, along with identifying what the factor was. No homework!

Today all 3 groups used the morning to work on the argument writing assessment!!  Students received a new topic with new documents & started working on their new writing piece!  I am SO PROUD of how hard the students worked and how serious they were about using their skills and knowledge to complete this task!!!!  We will continue this work in English tomorrow.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we discussed the video clip we watched on American Samoa & then students started doing an independent web activity on young immigrant experiences.  No Homework!

SS:  Today we worked on identifying a location in early US history based on clues.  No HW

Math:  We spent our time this morning working on an English assessment.  However, students did have homework from yesterday that is due tomorrow (we've spent several in-class days on them already so there shouldn't be much left)!  Checklist of due assignments for Thursday:
     1. Geometry project that was assigned November 17!
     2. Each of the three geometry practice sheets posted (2 from Monday and 1 from Tuesday).  The Tuesday one is challenging and each child may struggle differently with this one.

Today we did a final rating on our argument writing by standard, which helped us also review the standards.  Students completed a question card to ask any final questions they had on the writing -- we addressed these individually.  Finally, we went through a preview of the assessment that we will start tomorrow.  HW - BRING HEADPHONES TOMORROW IF YOU CAN!!

Social Studies -
Today we discussed the Migration Data from yesterday and shared conclusions.  Then, we watched a 60 Minutes video clip on the island of American Samoa.  We will discuss push/pull factors tomorrow!

What a fabulous morning we had to spend in Saugatuck! We had a great time! Here are a couple of the beach art creations. The kids had a chance to play, be creative, zoom in on nature, and enjoy the peaceful (and beautiful) surroundings.

Social Studies - Today we discussed the sights & observations on our field trip.  Then, we reviewed the 5 Themes of Geography as they applied to our field trip today.  Finally, we did a rough draft of a city we will create for an assessment that we will work on later this week.  No Homework!

ATTENTION PARENTS

This morning, we had an opportunity to have our girls meet with Mrs. Goodman (counselor) to discuss friendships, including friends v frenemies.  Our boys also met with her to discuss how to make and keep friends.  This is a good conversation to continue at home.  Many of our kiddos are struggling with being good friends, as well as how to accept when a friendship ends (or should end).

Science: Today in Science the students shared their slideshows with their progressive pictures of their ecosystem. They shared what data they collected and the conclusion they discovered. No homework!

Social Studies: The students watched CNN10 and then practiced being global citizens by researching a country in Africa to teach their classmates about. No homework!

SS:  Today we looked and the Map of Michigan and examined the features present on a real map.  We practiced some of our map skills with these, including learning to fold them (haha).  No HW

Math:  Today we quizzed over verbal models, substitution, and parts of an expression.  No HW

Today we watched Tour the World again at the request of the students.  We reviewed our vocabulary with a worksheet.  We then added compass rose to our vocabulary & discussed its purpose.  Students were given some directions for starting their own compass rose.  No Homework!!

Saugatuck State Park Field Trip

Throughout 6th grade, one of our goals is to give ALL students outside learning experiences in each season.  For our fall outdoor experience, we will be headed as a team to the Saugatuck State Park for some activities.  There is no cost for this experience, but wanted to inform you that your student will be off campus for this trip in case you needed to plan accordingly for appointments, etc.

Students read a section of text about the tools geographers used.  We looked at a variety of map projections and discussed the issues with each.  Finally, we talked about how the size of certain places is actually different than what is projected on a map sometimes.  No Homework!

**Reminder:  Tomorrow (Friday) is a half day with a 10:45 dismissal.  Students have a Fuel Up to Play 60 event & should dress ready to move.  Also, Monday there is no school for students.**

Today we reviewed all of our terms, and finished our discussion on how the assessments will be graded.  Students had an opportunity to ask any final questions.  Then, they got started by reading the story of "The Loser".  Students had an option to read alone or listen to a read aloud version.  This story is what they will use for their characterization and summary assessment which will be completed tomorrow.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Students did a group challenge today.  They had to attempt to wrap a ball with paper without overlapping.  This is an introductory activity to discussing map projections.  No Homework!

Science: Today in Science, the students took an assessment covering two standards (1- developing and using models to show knowledge, 2- construct, use, and/or present a written argument supported by observable evidence and scientific reasoning to support or refute an explanation or a model for a phenomenon).

After the assessment, the students heard about our assigned mini-ecosystems we will be observing over the next couple weeks.

Today we did a reading exercise called, What is Geography?  Then, we started discussing the concept of looking at situations through different lenses.  No Homework!!

Today we worked on our empathy mapping.  Students had a common student scenario & had to work in a small group to identify what that person is thinking, seeing, saying, doing, feeling, and hearing under the circumstances.  Then, we shared out and discussed.  We are really working on thinking about others and showing kindness & empathy.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Students had time to work on their 5 themes flip books.  Then, we read a Berenstein Bears story & attempted to apply the themes to the story.  No Homework!

Today we watched CNN 10.  Then, we finished our notes and discussion about the 5 themes of geography.  Students started to create a flip book for the 5 themes.

Math:  We continue working with our factors.  Section 1.4 numbers 1 - 25 are to be completed by tomorrow's class.  Calculators are OK.  Math notes can be found on the math notebook page (link on the right).

SS:  We have been researching our hometown and how the 5 themes are represented.  Students are creating posters for this.  Posters will be presented in class tomorrow.  HW:  Finish if needed.

Science: Today in Science, the students began discussing the ecosystem of a salmon. We watched a couple video clips, brainstormed in a group, researched a tad, and began writing a journal drawing and writing about a salmon's ecosystem. In the journal, they are asked to use all 5 of our science academic vocabulary words we have defined so far. No homework!

Social Studies: Today the students did their first academic vocabulary word for SS: analyze. After this, we worked on 5 themes of geography flipbooks. No homework!

Today we discussed feeling safe in school & its impact on our learning.  We defined the terms:  bullying, bully, and victim.  Then, we read about different types of bullying.  Students are in groups to become an "expert" on one type -- they are planning a quick presentation to teach the class about the type.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we reviewed the word analyze by looking at details in a picture.  Then, we started discussing the 5 Themes of Geography.  No Homework!!

SS:  Today is Constitution Day!  We watched CNN10 and tried our hand at some Constitution trivia.  Then we put the preamble in order (we learned it last year) and worked on its definition.  No HW

Today we had some work time and sharing time to wrap up our summer story writing.  Then, we completed a journal in regards to how safe students feel in school & if they believe safety impacts the ability to learn.  We will use this discussion to springboard into our 1st official unit where we will be reading & writing about bullying.  No Homework!!

Social Studies -
Today we did activities that centered around a celebration of Constitution Day.  No Homework!!
